I have a chronic illness and disability called Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. After being sick for more than 13 years, I was finally given a name for the thing that changed my life. It is a connective tissue disorder that causes joint hypermobility, joint instability and chronic pain. It can be merely aggravating to some, while disabling others. Even though 7 out of 10 hEDS patients are women, it takes them on average 6 times as long to get diagnosed. The gender diagnosis disparity for hEDS is not uncommon among chronic illnesses, even ones in which a majority of the patients are women.
